International Aspects of Economic Growth in the Nineteenth Century

Abstract
This chapter analyses the international dimensions of economic growth during the nineteenth century , emphasizing how the flows of goods, capital and labour integrated national economies and diffused industrial technology and social innovation . This chapter explores the centre-periphery structure of the world economy , with Britain’s Industrial Revolution initiating global growth and technological diffusion, later shared by continental Europe and the US . It examines how export-led growth, foreign investment and migration fostered development in the new settlement regions — the US, Canada, Argentina, Australia and New Zealand — while leaving many peripheral economies as dependent enclaves . The analysis highlights the importance of transportation, communications and financial innovations in expanding markets and enabling technological diffusion , as well as the constraints of limited capital, human resources and institutional rigidity . Ultimately, this chapter argues that while the international economy facilitated the transmission of growth, uneven absorptive capacities determined the geographic limits of industrialization before 1914.
