Abstract
This chapter begins with an exploration of the early history of nitrogen on Earth, from the planet's accretive formation about 4.6 billion years ago, to recent glaciations, tens of thousands of years ago; involving such contended questions as the initial delivery of volatiles to the planet, the redox potential of the early atmosphere, and the conditions required for prebiotic organic synthesis. The nature and relative importance of the four modes of nitrogen fixation—lightning fixation, biological fixation, high-temperature combustion fixation, and industrial fixation—is explored and related to gaseous and aqueous fluxes of nitrogen compounds. Given the importance of the ocean as a sink for terrestrial nitrogen and our increased understanding in recent years of nitrogen fixation and denitrification rates, an oceanic budget is presented.
