Abstract
In comparison to the emergence of the first humans over a million years ago, the state is of exceedingly recent origin, arising only in the last fraction of that tremendous time-span, first identifiable over five-thousand years ago. While politics can be construed very broadly its meaning, as we shall see, will be confined to activity related to the state. Political theory, whose primary focus is the state (and politics), is of much more recent vintage, less than one-third the age of the state.
