Abstract
ABSTRACT The mineral relations of the lemma of Phalaris canariensis L. were investigated using standard chemical analysis and, at the ultrastructural level, using freeze substitution followed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Potassium, calcium, magnesium and chloride concentrations in the whole lemma declined following emergence of the panicle, as did tissue water content. Lemma dry weight doubled between emergence and inflorescence maturity. Using energy dispersive analysis silicon, potassium, chlorine and phosphorus were detectable in the lemma tissues. In a more detailed study of macrohairs originating from the outer epidermis of the lemma, silicon was shown to enter the hair walls soon after emergence. The cell walls appeared to be the major route for soluble silicon movement in the hairs. Phosphorus was mainly located in the hair cytoplasm, while potassium and chlorine were present in the vacuole, cytoplasm and cell wall. The mechanism of silica deposition in the hairs is discussed.
