Abstract
Drug delivery systems capable of releasing active compounds in response to stimuli such as pH or temperature changes have attracted increasing interest in recent years. Among these systems, pH-sensitive liposomes have been studied extensively. These vesicles are generally stable at neutral pH and become leaky and/or fusogenic under acidic conditions. In this work, we describe the preparation of pH-sensitive phospholipid (liposomes) and non-phospholipid vesicles (niosomes) through the formation of pH-sensitive polymer/bilayer complexes. The vesicles are characterized with respect to their pH-sensitivity, stability in serum, pharmacokinetics and in vitro ability to deliver a model compound to the cytoplasm.
