Abstract
La mort artistique tient de la perte ou de l’absence : ce qui avait été n’est plus. C’est précisément ce dont on a accusé Schumann en rapport avec sa deuxième « phase créatrice » : la sève imaginative se serait tarie, perte reliée au diagnostic d’une maladie mentale. Malgré l’indéniable complexité de la psyché schumannienne, la relecture récente de ses oeuvres permet de renverser ce préjugé et de mieux comprendre le comment d’une rupture stylistique qui correspond à une volte-face voulue par le compositeur. Ainsi repoussa-t-il la mort jusqu’à sa plus tardive limite.
