On a beaucoup étudié Louis Riel en tant qu’homme politique, mais encore peu en tant qu’homme de lettres. En fait, ce n’est que depuis la parution en 1985 du volume 4 des Écrits complets de Louis Riel, sous la direction de Glen Campbell, que les chercheurs ont accès à l’ensemble de l’œuvre poétique du fondateur du Manitoba. L’intérêt d’étudier les écrits poétiques de Riel réside surtout dans le caractère unique d’un univers poétique où coexistent et s’affrontent un domaine temporel et un domaine spirituel. Le premier s’inspire de la dure réalité vécue par le peuple métis ainsi que des problèmes personnels de Louis Riel. Le domaine spirituel, quant à lui, se construit à partir des traditions catholiques. Ainsi, le poète travaille à donner un caractère légitime à sa vocation de prophète en s’appropriant certaines des caractéristiques de la prêtrise.
