Abstract
In response to their fears, uncertainties and anxieties, Victorians came to believe that the best preventative against the problems of society was a good school. From this followed the idea that the only security of a good school was a good teacher. ‘The teacher makes the school’ was a clarion call echoed throughout the Victorian period in England and abroad to ensure schools were filled with nothing but the best teachers. With the idea that the good teacher was the only guarantee of a good school planted in the minds of education reformers, a new set of ideas and reasoning about the teacher began to take shape. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
