Abstract

A probability distribution function, which may also be called a probability density function, gives the set of probabilities associated with each of the values that a random variable can take. In practice, distribution functions are used when there are a series of potential results, for example interest rates. Probability distribution functions enable a lot of information to be portrayed in a form that enables management to understand both the spread of the information and the nature of any uncertainty contained within the observations. This chapter introduces a number of important distributions, beginning with the simplest of distributions, the discrete uniform distribution.
