Abstract
Abstract Joseph Dunlop’s chapter examines the influence of the interwar renouveau catholique in Francophone Canada, through the Montreal-based review La Relève, founded in 1934. Dunlop explores the development of Catholic identity through the engagements and faith of the young francophone Canadian intellectuals involved in La Relève. Its roots were in traditionalist French Canadian nationalism and militant social Catholicism, but the emphasis gradually shifted to personalism and the “new Christian humanism” in the later 1930s and early 1940s, many relèvistes joining with Jacques Maritain in his critique of the Catholic authoritarianism. In the postwar period, the journal championed a more open and eclectic pluralism and progressivism, an ethos shared by Pierre Trudeau and others who played a prominent role in Quebec’s Quiet Revolution from the 1950s into the 1970s. In the years following Vatican II, the sympathy of a number of relèvistes increasingly lay with dissident Catholic thinkers, rather than with Maritain’s calls for a return to orthodoxy.
