Abstract
AuszugEiner der Pioniere der Mikrochirurgie, deren Entwicklung er sowohl durch experimentelle als auch durch klinische Arbeiten einleitete, ist HARRY J. BUNCKE. Er wurde am 16. Juli 1922 in Iroquois Falls, Ontario, Kanada, als Sohn eines Ingenieurs geboren, der aus den USA dorthin eingewandert war, um an der damals größten Papiermühle der Welt zu arbeiten. Nach der Schulzeit, während der die Familie in die USA zurückkehrte, begann er ein Ingenieurstudium, das im Krieg durch den Wehrdienst unterbrochen wurde. Er besuchte die Offizierschule (midshipman’s school) der US Navy (Swarthmore und Abbot Hall, Chicago), erhielt hohe Ehrungen und wurde als „battalion commander“ ausgezeichnet. Das Medizinstudium absolvierte er nach der Entlassung am New York Medical College bis 1951. Nach der Zeit als Intern und Resident in Allgemeinchirurgie wandte er sich der plastischen Chirurgie zu und erhielt in den Jahren 1954 bis 1956 eine Ausbildung an der Cornell Medical School unter HERBERT CONWAY. Anschließend war er in Großbritannien je sechs Monate tätig am Plastic and Maxillofacial Centre, Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead und an der Plastic Surgical and Burn Unit, Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Glasgow. Während dieser Zeit begann er auf Anregung von THOMAS GIBSON, sich mit Mikrochirurgie zu beschäftigen und führte nach seiner Rückkehr in die USA in San Mateo, California, zahlreiche Experimente durch, vor allem mit der Replantation amputierter Kaninchenohren und der „toe-to-hand“-Transplantation an Rhesusaffen. Er half bei der Einrichtung weiterer mikrochirurgischer Laboratorien (unter anderem am Ralph K. Davies Medical Center in San Francisco 1970) und auch bei der einweisenden Durchführung spezieller Operationen an Zentren im In- und Ausland. Er und sein Team führten als Erste in den USA eine Zehentransplantation am Menschen, eine Skalpreplantation, eine Vierfingerreplantation und eine kombinierte Serratus-Latissimus-Transplantation aus. HARRY BUNCKE bildete über 150 Chirurgen aus aller Welt aus, veröffentlichte mehr als 425 Arbeiten in Zeitschriften und Büchern und war Mitautor an vier Büchern über Mikrochirurgie. An der University of California in San Francisco und am Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto wurde er Professor.
