Abstract
In this chapter I wish to argue two points: the first concerns the role played by great metropolitan centres such as Osaka and Tokyo as engines of Japanese economic development; and the second involves the shift from an Osaka-centred economy to a Tokyo-centred economy, a shift that occurred between the two world wars.
