Abstract
This chapter discusses how the dollar is performing poorly with countries especially in Asia having been accumulating reserves. As at the end of the first quarter of 2009, these reserves totaled US$6.5 trillion, close to one-half of US gross domestic product (GDP). By 2010, China is expected to overtake Japan as the world's second largest economy. By end-2009, China looks certain to overtake Germany as the world's second largest trading nation. Sure, the US dollar system is fl awed. Yet, China cannot have unrealistic expectations. The author suggests that the world needs to move innovatively and act boldly. In the short run, an expanded SDR will be needed, evolving step by step into a real-time trading and settlement currency in world market.
