Abstract
This chapter describes the formation and development of Nanay: A Testimonial Play, an attempt by the author of this book and the Philippine Women Centre of British Columbia to bring their research on the conditions of Filipino domestic workers to a wider public. Testimonial or documentary theater offers an opportunity to create a broader debate around the Live-In Caregiver Program and the challenges of care in Canadian society. As a site-specific play, Nanay pulls audiences to the issue—including Canadians who have been oblivious to it—and to affect them through speech, bodily sensation, objects, movement, and touching details from individuals’ lives. The play can be seen as an egalitarian space as it allows migrant domestic workers, in their precarious and slippery status as noncitizen residents, to command the attention of a mainstream audience on an equal footing with Canadian employers and to the Canadian government as well.
