Abstract
Greek pneumatics will serve as our horizon point. The pneuma , or vital breath, has as its source the soul of the world, animating Ptolemy’s sky as well as Galen’s medicine. In Ptolemy’s sky, the stars have a determining influence on earthly mixed bodies, along with the elementary composition of bodies; the sky has great explanatory power for the most important thinkers of Antiquity and the Middle Ages. This primary causal role played by the sky in all natural and human events is totally absent from modern calculations and problematics: astrology has been marginalized in the world of knowledge for the past several centuries. On the contrary, physicians and other scientists of Antiquity and the occidental Middle Ages uphold the existence of the Astrum , composed of fluxes originating from each planet and of the influence of the constellations upon the events under examination.
