Abstract
Although collective creation transcended national borders and became a truly international movement, the various parts of the world where it emerged did not experience it in the same fashion, nor did the movement have the same impact or meaning in different regional contexts. Associated with the counterculture movement that began with the Algerian War (1954– 62), peaking with the May'68 upheavals, and ending with the withdrawal of all American troops from Vietnam in 1975, collective creation in Quebec was also part of an unprecedented liberation movement involving Francophone Quebecers. This movement manifested itself in Quebec in two ways: the assertion of the distinctive character of Francophone identity, and a search for greater political, economic, and cultural independence in an environment dominated by Anglophones across Canada and the rest of North America. This merging of counterculture ideology with postcolonial dynamics was the source of the particular nature of Francophone collective creation in Quebec, and it accounts for its historical importance.1
