Abstract
Foucault complicated the historical knowledge about who we are. His methodology and methods are tools for evaluating the truth and of what is said to be true about persons in their historical transformation. He relied on archaeology and genealogy to examine the epistemological concepts and ontological limits of the modes by which we are made subjects. These methods assist the assessment of modern educational practices in historical imperatives of knowing oneself and taking care of oneself. This is Foucault’s contribution to critical theory and extends the critical tradition in philosophy not solely as a methodology, but also as an ethical practice embedded in the day-to-day activity and experience of persons.
