Abstract
La principauté de Monaco a été, à la charnière des xixe et xxe siècles, un centre de diffusion du pacifisme, grâce à l’action d’Albert Ier. Cette action tire son origine des convictions humanistes du prince. Elle constitue le prolongement politique de son activité scientifique, au service du progrès humain. La volonté de faire de Monaco un pôle de rayonnement du pacifisme s’est concrétisée par la création de l’Institut international de la paix en 1903. Albert Ier s’est aussi voulu diplomate et homme d’influence, au service de la paix. Les négociations sur la question marocaine en 1905 marquent l’apogée de son rôle de médiateur, entre la France et l’Allemagne. Après la Première Guerre mondiale Albert Ier subit la déconvenue de se voir refuser l’entrée de son pays dans la Société des Nations. Il doit se contenter d’un relatif succès dans le domaine de la coopération scientifique, par la mise en place de la Commission de la Méditerranée.
