Abstract
In a context of heightened public anxiety around religion in Europe, this chapter traces the genealogy of the anti-mosque movement in Germany in its connection to contemporary forms of right-wing populist movements such as Pegida. Nijhawan offers a critique of discourses on German and European leitkultur (normative culture) and situates debates on the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamat as critical to this discussion. The chapter examines a particular mosque dispute in Schlüchtern near Frankfurt and examines key texts used by anti-immigrant groups in their agitations against Ahmadis. The chapter also contains a section on the Sikh turban, which in liberal discourses occupies an ambiguous place inasmuch as the mosque does in its move from the “backyard mosque” to the publicly visible mosque.
