Las intervenciones sobre el espacio urbano tienden a hacer parte de las agendas políticas locales que buscan crear una imagen atractiva de la ciudad, en un marco de competición interurbana. En este artículo se presenta el resultado de una aproximación antropológica a dos operaciones urbanísticas en dos ciudades intermedias de Francia (Montpellier) y Colombia (Pereira), que transformaron el espacio urbano y favorecieron un proyecto de producción de imagen promocional de la ciudad. Se sostiene que estas acciones públicas urbanísticas obedecen a regímenes ideológicos de orientación neoliberal, que inciden en la concepción del espacio. Entre los resultados se destaca que a pesar de la existencia de formas de gobierno centradas en principios ideológicos similares, en cada ciudad, los espacios transformados revelan modalidades diversas de construcción de la imagen, cada una propia de una versión particular de modernidad.
