Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Nowadays, the majority of the processes are based on the Internet. This means that the most popular documents are those located on the net. The cartographic information is not very widespread in this sense due to several reasons: first, the recent interest toward this science from the documentary perspective, and secondly, the absence of a solid scientific basis, among others. While a number of studies demonstrates the growing interest among researchers to the cartographic science from their different points of view (historiographical, artistic, cultural, etc.), there are few publications in this science from a documentative aspect about information retrieval. This document takes as a purpose the recovery and study of the foreign cartographic fund relating to the American continent placed in the Naval Archive of Cartagena, with the goal of developing a list of specific metadata related to this document format. Processes of organization, digitalization and cataloguing have been made in order to achieve the goal mentioned above. In addition, a detailed study of the elements has been made that compose every documentary unit, resulting in a list of 51 metadata, 30 of them related to the content of cartography and 21 elements concerning the production of the document. The results show that the Naval Archive of Cartagena is composed of 597 foreign nautical charts relating to the American continent, which contain 666 cartridges, giving a total of 1263 documentary units, whose publication range varies between 1817 and 1978. According to their scales are distributed in: General charts (41%), Coast charts (23'2%), Intracoastal Waterway charts (21'5%), Harbor charts (13'4%) and Sailing charts (0'9%). The cartography of the fund has been published according to the following percentages: United Kingdom (45'2%), United States (29'3%), Chile (19'6%), Canada (5'2%) and finally France (0'7%). The editors of these charts are divided between public institutions (Hydrographic Office of the Admiralty, Oficina Hidrografica de Chile, etc.) and private companies (James Imray and Son; Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson, Ltd.; etc.). Furthermore, the results determine that there is a significant number of charts which have been based on the other maps. The cartography that is related to this principle corresponds to the 26'76% of the sample, of which the 9'47% are maps that have been reproduced from Spanish charts. As has been demonstrated, this new methodological proposal allows the exhaustive description of this documentary typology, nautical charts, making easier its recovery in the current digital information channels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
