Abstract
Abstract A binderless ternary catalyst layer of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/Pt–MnO2 is presented. The Pt–MnO2 nanocomposites with different surface morphology are grown directly for the first time onto CNTs at room temperature through the application of a cross‐beam pulsed laser deposition method, and their electroactivity in sulfuric acid and towards ethanol electrooxidation is examined. It is demonstrated that the electrochemical activity of the CNT/Pt–MnO2 nanocomposites outperforms the benchmark CNT/Pt material. The superior catalytic performance of the Pt–MnO2 electrocatalyst towards ethanol oxidation is attributed to the presence of MnO2, which promotes the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol by accelerating the dehydrogenation process, provides hydroxyl groups to oxidize the adsorbed intermediates (CO‐like species) on Pt surface and, by that, increases Pt utilization through the synergistic effect between Pt and MnO2.
