Dans le cadre d’un vaste projet de recherche-action pancanadien sur la violence structurelle envers les jeunes, cet article présente une réflexion théorique sur ce concept. Il fait d’abord une rétrospective de la façon dont les théoriciens ont défini le concept de la violence structurelle, les différentes critiques associées à son opérationnalisation de même que les mutations qu’il a subies depuis son introduction par Galtung en 1969. Le texte se termine par une discussion autour des principaux enjeux analytiques et empiriques inhérents à son utilisation et propose une grille d’analyse pour l’étude de ce concept en service social.
