Les assurances des biens des entreprises ne couvrent que les dommages directement subis par celles-ci. Les pertes indirectes qui résultent de dommages directs ne sont pas assurées. Elles font l’objet, suivant une appréciation distincte du risque, d’une protection spéciale : l’assurance des pertes d’exploitation. Dans la première partie de cet article, l’auteur décrit la nature, l’étendue et le fonctionnement de cette assurance ainsi que les principaux formulaires disponibles, notamment celui d’indemniser l’assuré de ses pertes d’exploitation pendant la période de temps nécessaire pour réparer ou remplacer les biens détruits ou endommagés ou encore pendant la période durant laquelle les résultats de l’entreprise, après avoir repris ses opérations, sont affectés par les effets du sinistre. Dans la deuxième partie, il décrit l’assurance des pertes d’exploitation subies par une entreprise en raison d’un sinistre subi par une autre entreprise indépendante (par exemple, un fournisseur ou un client important).
