Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Research on African American families throughout the twentieth century has focused largely on the prevalence of single-mother families. Much debate has focused on understanding the strengths and weaknesses of these families, yet rarely have scholars sought to analyze the marital decision-making process of Black women. In this paper I provide a gender perspective on the roots of a “non-marriage ethos” among African American women that dates back to the abolition of slavery. I argue that a significant minority of women refused to enter patriarchal marriages because doing so would have jeopardized their cultural traditions, material resources, and autonomy. I also tie this non-marriage ethos to marriage and family among Black women today.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
