Abstract
En 1948, Jacques Ferron quitte la Gaspesie ou il pratique la medecine depuis deux ans et ouvre un cabinet de consultation a Ville Jacques-Cartier, une banlieue pauvre situee au sud de Montreal. Il y restera jusqu'a sa mort. S'il n'a jamais accepte l'etiquette de « medecin des pauvres » que la critique lui a longtemps collee, il n'a pas hesite, toutefois, a se definir comme un « medecin de banlieue ». Toute son oeuvre romanesque et sa riche correspondance publique et privee portent des traces de cette periode vecue dans ce qu'il appelait ironiquement le « Farouest dans la vallee du Saint-Laurent ».
