精製されているはずの糖脂質を薄層クロマトグラフィーで調べると、2つとか3つのバンドに分かれてしまうことがよくあるが、組換えキメラタンパク質、遺伝子導入、シグナル伝達、リン酸化カスケードなどの研究が全盛の今日、これでは軽蔑の眼で見られるのが落ちだろう。こうしたあたりまえのような複雑さこそが、膜糖脂質の本質ともいえるのであるが、これが糖鎖部分の機能を調節している可能性が高まっている。人工的な表面を利用した糖脂質機能のアッセイでは、糖部分を本来の結合相手分子から切り離し、本来とは異なる (多かれ少なかれ) 生きていない担体に気安く移しているが、糖鎖とレセプターの働きを微調節できなくなくしている可能性がある。糖脂質糖鎖に対するレセプターの機能は、糖脂質り脂肪酸部分の影響によって、糖鎖の配列だけから予想したものよりも、少なくとも数倍は複雑になっていることが最近の研究で示唆されている。
