El Quijote excluye toda clasificacion dentro de los generos tradicionales por tratarse de un modo peculiar de re-produccion de muy diferentes modelos de escritura. En efecto, bajo el pretexto –nada original en el momento de su escritura-- de mera parodia de los libros de caballeria, el Quijote constituye un autentico Literaturroman (Werner Krauss, 1959) en que se ofrece como materia novelable todo un panorama literario de su tiempo. Esta dimension de la novela cervantina no se da solo al nivel de la historia por cuanto se relatan las acciones de un loco que, en su patologica distorsion de la lectura, confunde ficcion y realidad; abarca tambien el nivel narrativo.
