Le sujet choisi comme objet de recherche a eu pour ambition de faire entrer l'énergie solaire dans le champ de l'historien. Ce postulat a amené à construire une méthodologie de recherche faisant appel à diverses disciplines et s'appuyant sur des écrits et des objets de nature variée. Véritable enquête patrimoniale, cette thèse a permis de mettre au jour plusieurs des histoires de la recherche solaire française afin de les consigner dans un ouvrage qui propose de rassembler ces chroniques afin de les rendre cohérentes entre elles et d'en dégager des problématiques. Parmi ces biographies solaires, l'une d'entre elles est particulièrement méconnue et représente pourtant un sujet riche. Il s'agit de la recherche solaire sur le sol algérien avant 1962, poursuivie à Marseille après cette date. Les instigateurs de ces laboratoires sont également ceux qui ont donné l'impulsion pour la création d'un important mouvement de chercheurs à l'échelle internationale, qui se regroupèrent sous le nom de Coopération méditerranéenne pour l'énergie solaire (COMPLES).
