Abstract
Arguing that intentional trade-offs between self-exploitation (unpaid work) and the care of others is a form of “compromise resistance,” this article extends Labour Process Theory in the area of resistance and dissent in care work. Drawing on data from studies of care work in the nonprofit care sector, this article explores whether workers’ dissent and resistance strategies promote the interests of workers or of management, or both, and whether these strategies act as a catalyst for change inside and/or outside the workplace, or if they legitimize constraint, or both.
