Abstract
The method of inverse gas chromatography (IGC) has been used to determine the temperature (T) dependence of acid-base functionality in a series of widely used thermoplastic polymers. Acid-base interaction potential diminishes with rising temperature and disappears completely at a defined characteristic temperature. At and above the characteristic T the polymers interact solely through dispersion forces. In inherently incompatible polymer pairs lap-shear bond strengths of assemblies joined above the characteristic temperature rose significantly over values for joints prepared below that T In compatible systems, joining above the characteristic T was counterproductive to bond strengths. The information may be used to define processing windows for polymer combinations offering superior interfacial properties.
