Auteur(s): VAN WAMBEKE P, LYSENS R, VYNCKE G, GEUSENS E | Samenvatting: Whiplashgeassocieerde stoornissen (WGS) zijn volgens de Quebec Task Force de verschillende klinische beelden die veroorzaakt kunnen worden door een whiplashtrauma. Via een grondige evaluatie met de klemtoon op anamnese en klinisch onderzoek, zo nodig aan te vullen met technische onderzoeken, kunnen deze stoornissen ingedeeld worden volgens ernstgraad. Hoewel een WGS meestal een goedaardig probleem betreft en herstel meestal te verwachten is op middellange termijn, zal ongeveer 50% van de patiënten na 1 jaar nog klachten vertonen en een klein percentage zal langdurig geïnvalideerd blijven. Naast het uitsluiten van een ernstige onderliggende pathologie is één van de belangrijkste opdrachten bij WGS dan ook het voorkomen dat de klachten chronisch worden. Hierin hebben prognostische factoren een centrale rol. Deze bij een individuele patiënt tijdig herkennen en op gepaste wijze via de juiste interventies aanpakken, is cruciaal in de behandeling van WGS.In dit overzicht wordt het classificatiesysteem van WGS toegelicht met specifieke aandacht voor belangrijke symptomen en tekens en wordt een overzicht gegeven van de verschillende prognostische factoren en hun invloed op het herstel van WGS.
