Abstract
Dans les années 1950, la dépression était une pathologie relativement marginale et les compagnies pharmaceutiques se montraient réticentes à investir dans le développement des antidépresseurs. Trois décennies plus tard environ, la dépression est redéfinie comme une véritable épidémie sociale et les antidépresseurs sont devenus le traitement de choix pour la soigner. Pour contribuer à comprendre ce renversement, il faut mettre en parallèle les profondes transformations de la normativité sociale dont les sociétés libérales ont été le théâtre et les développements spectaculaires du champ de la psychiatrie biologique. La mise en lumière de l’imbrication de ces deux dimensions montre que les nouvelles règles de la santé mentale sont indissociables des règles de l’individualité contemporaine.
