Abstract
Phipps argues that the relationship between American material history and the growth of pragmatism is best examined from a literary perspective, an approach that brings the fiction of Henry James into dialogue with the pragmatist writings of William James, Charles Peirce, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Although they worked in different disciplines, these authors adopted a shared language by structuring their models of experience and truth around metaphors, characters, and settings that contain references to large-scale material developments in late nineteenth-century America. In this way, the literary aspects of pragmatist texts connect philosophical ideas to historic touchstones of consolidation such as the Civil War and corporatization. The Introduction argues that it is in Henry James’s fiction and through his characters that pragmatist intersections between literature, philosophy, and material history find full expression.
