The inhibitory deficit hypothesis, or inhibitory theory, is an attention‐based, general model of cognition that accounts for age differences in patterns of spared and impaired functioning in healthy older adults, patterns also seen in other populations such as those with attention deficits, those with depression, and individuals who are out of phase with their circadian rhythms. Efficient inhibitory processes enable goals to regulate thought and action by suppressing otherwise automatic activation of goal‐irrelevant information. Deficits in inhibitory regulation result in heightened distractibility, greater knowledge of irrelevant information, sustained access to no longer relevant information, greater reliance on environmental cues, reduced working memory capacity, greater proactive interference, poorer retrieval of details, greater production of highly probable responses, and the implicit use of the recent past in new situations. Differences among individuals and among groups result from the efficiency of inhibition operating in the service of goals.
