Abstract
As a profession, pharmacists are required to possess knowledge of pharmaceuticals, skills in communication, and the ability to use these two facets in the clinical arena to optimize drug therapy in patients. The education of pharmacy students is designed to permit attainment of these basic goals. Most entry-level Canadian programs in pharmacy are at the bachelor's level and are 4 years in duration after acceptance into the pharmacy program. This chapter demonstrates the utility of data mining from admissions records to permit an assessment of the relationship between each of the prerequisite courses for admission into the pharmacy program at the University of Alberta and academic performance of admitted students in the first year of the program. English was a significant positive predictor of certain courses with a pharmacy practice focus, but not more basic/pharmaceutical sciences.
