Abstract
C’est par une comparaison, à vrai dire non systématique, mais stimulante, entre deux époques, que l’historien Georges Duby dissipe le mythe de l’an mil, mais surtout contribue à la compréhension de la genèse des peurs dans l’histoire des mentalités. À partir de l’ouvrage An 1000 An 2000, sur les traces de nos peurs , sont dégagées les composantes de sources d’inquiétude ou de terreur : la misère (incluant la famine), l’autre, les épidémies, la violence et enfin, l’au-delà. De ce tableau, l’auteure de l’article esquisse certains liens entre ces peurs, souvent rendues plus vivaces sous l’égide des pouvoirs temporels et spirituels.
