Abstract
Après une réflexion sur le rôle de l’architecture conçue comme un art qui a pour fonction de répondre aux besoins des vivants dans l’exercice de leur activité quotidienne, ce texte s’intéresse à la façon dont cet art – fréquemment associé à la sculpture à cette fin – se charge également de perpétuer la mémoire des défunts. Puisque l’oeuvre architecturale est forcément indissociable du lieu où elle est érigée, une attention particulière sera portée aux types de lieu retenus pour l’érection des monuments. Seront considérés successivement le lieu de la mort, le lieu de l’inhumation et les lieux qui ont valeur symbolique eu égard à la vie des disparus. La réflexion mettra l’accent sur les façons très variées dont l’architecture parvient à mettre en relief les dimensions diverses de notre relation à la mort et à ceux qui nous ont précédés.
