Abstract
ZusammenfassungDie britische Kolonialzeit beginnt mit der Eroberung Quebecs (Friede von Paris 1763), doch die kolonialen Koordinaten wurden schon früher abgesteckt: im Nordwesten und Westen sowie an der Atlantikküste. Die 1670 gegründete Hudson’s Bay Company entwickelte sich seit Ende des 18. Jh.s zur beherrschenden Kraft im kanadischen Westen. Einen teilweise blutig geführten Konkurrenzkampf mit der North West Company in Montreal entschied sie 1821 zu ihren Gunsten. Bis zum Verkauf ihres Territoriums 1870 an das drei Jahre zuvor aus dem Kolonialstatus entlassene Dominion of Canada wurde die Gesellschaft zur nahezu unumschränkten Herrscherin eines Gebiets, das von der Hudson Bay bis zur Pazifikküste reichte. Da der Pelzhandel eine nennenswerte agrarische Besiedlung des Westens verhinderte, setzte der Siedlungsprozess an der Atlantikküste ein. 1713 wurde im Frieden von Utrecht die überwiegend von französischen Siedlern bewohnte Kolonie Akadien England zugeschlagen. Aus strategischen Erwägungen wurde 1749 in Nova Scotia (Neuschottland), so der englische Name von Akadien, die Garnisonsstadt Halifax gegründet. Die Deportation von ca. 7.000 Akadiern 1755 war eine ›ethnische Säuberung‹, die Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in seinem auch in Kanada populären Versepos Evangeline (1847) sentimental verarbeitete.
