Abstract
Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are a by-product that microbes produce when fermenting feed in the rumen. Ruminants have evolved to utilise SCFAs as their primary energy source. However, as a weak acid, SCFA will dissociate in the rumen releasing a proton (aka acid), thereby decreasing ruminal pH under most circumstances. As such, there is a fine line between diets that promote fermentation and SCFA production that can be tolerated, and diets that cause excessive SCFA production and low ruminal pH.
