Los trabajos de campo del Proyecto Santa de la Universidad de Montreal, realizados entre los años 2000 y 2008, permitieron estudiar la cronologia y causas de la presencia moche en la parte baja del valle de Santa. Las primeras hipótesis sobre este fenómeno señalaban la conquista militar moche del valle durante la Fase Moche III. Sin embargo nuestros datos indican un control graduai de Santa por los lideres moches, quienes durante dos siglos cohabitaron con una poblaciôn local culturalmente asociada a la manifesta-ciôn Gallinazo antes de emprender la reorganización politica del valle. Entre los siglos vi y vii d.C. ocu-rriô una importante migraciôn de pobladores del valle de Moche hacia Santa, evento que transformaria a esta zona en una nueva provincia del estado Moche Sureño. En el siglo viii d.C. sucederia el abandono de los principales monumentos ceremoniales y administrativos moches en Guadalupito, la capital durante la Fase Moche IV local, momento durante el cual los accesos a los edificios pûblicos fueron sellados como parte del retiro planificado de la élite dirigente del asentamiento. En base a una serie fefechas radiocar-bónicas y evidencias estratigráficas es posible sostener que la presencia moche en Santa perduro por mâs de cuatro siglos, habiendo experimentado cambios estructurales y distintas estrategias de consolidation politica y econômica. La expansion meridional moche constituye un notable caso de estudio sobre la formation de los estados andinos prehispânicos, y permite evaluar en un marco diacrônico el desarrollo local y regional de un estado Moche multivalle centralizado en Huacas de Moche.
