Abstract
This paper examines the use of computational fluid dynamics for modeling fire development and smoke production. It examines fundamental fire dynamics concepts including: grid resolution, plume entrainment rates, combustion models, smoke modeling, radiative fraction, non-orthogonal geometries, interface height calculation, and boundary layer modeling. The paper provides guidelines for the proper treatment of each factor and recommendations for avoiding modeling errors. It examines the NIST Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) software, however many of the issues, results and discussions are applicable to other fire models
