Abstract
Abstract Between the 17th and the 20th centuries, Britain wove together a massive maritime empire in the Indian Ocean World. What was initially a commercial venture under the aegis of the English East India Company ultimately became an empire of conquest that was fiercely guarded and carefully policed. The empire, in its prime, spanned from the eastern coast of Africa in the west to Australia in the east, and in effect, the entire range of the oceanic rim in between. From the beginning, the British Indian Ocean Empire played a central role in Britain's global empire and served as one of the primary theaters for European imperial contests.
