Making places through sport tourism events: The case of the Canadian Death Race

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide insight into the ways that small-scale sporting events contribute to visitor and resident understandings of the host community. A case study methodology was used featuring the Canadian Death Race (CDR) in Grande Cache, Alberta. Data collection was divided into two phases with the first phase consisting of 10 in-depth interviews with local event organizers, politicians, town administrators and members of the business community. A further 70 interviews were conducted with racers, local and visiting volunteers, visiting supporters and local residents in the second phase of the study. Preliminary findings show that the race has functioned as a place maker, albeit in different ways for different groups.
