Abstract
Qu’est-ce que l’amour ? Un rapport. Une relation entre un « je » et un « tu » qui se définit selon des modalités spécifiques et se distingue des autres relations généralement observables dans une société. C’est là une chose simple; pourtant, la définition du rapport amoureux est problématique. De quoi est-il fait ? Le point de vue présenté ici consiste à définir les relations amoureuses, non pas comme des expériences individuelles et uniques, mais comme des expériences sociales à situer dans leur contexte respectif. L’analyse de contenu de lettres d’amour québécoises (1860-1988) est un moyen privilégié pour dégager une définition du rapport amoureux : rapport social qui, du point de vue de ses transformations dans le temps, participe de la genèse de la notion moderne d’individu. L’analyse présentée propose une définition du rapport amoureux par une série d’oppositions qui sont autant de paradoxes.
