Au cours des dernières décennies, plusieurs chercheurs se sont intéressés à la problématique des personnes atteintes de troubles cognitifs liés à différentes conditions pathologiques dont la démence artériopathique ou de type Alzheimer. Trop peu cependant se sont interrogés sur la vie affective et sexuelle de ces mêmes personnes. Dans cet article, nous tenterons d’abord de clarifier le concept de sexualité et de mettre en relief la réalité qu’il sous-tend. Puis, nous rappellerons les modifications liées au vieillissement en ce qui concerne la réponse sexuelle, l’image corporelle, l’identité et d’autres composantes de la sexualité. Nous ferons ensuite état d’observations concernant l’expression de la sexualité chez la personne démente qui, disons-le, est bien souvent aussi une personne âgée. Enfin, nous illustrerons notre propos en rapportant un fragment de l’histoire de madame Rose, une personne atteinte de troubles cognitifs et nous terminerons par des réflexions suscitées par cette histoire.
