Abstract
World grain prices are forecast to improve in 2001-02 as consumption grows faster than production and stocks fall. Wheat and coarse grain prices are projected to remain steady in real terms for the remainder of the projection period to 2005-06, while oilseeds prices are projected to ease. Total Australian area sown to grains is projected to increase from 20.9 million hectares in 2000-2001 to around 21.7 million hectares in 2005-06, as producers largely maintain returns through a combination of steady world prices in real terms and continuing productivity growth. With Australia being a major exporter of grains, the five year outlook for Australian grain prices and production will be strongly influenced by developments in world markets, with key issues being world economic growth, the size of grain crops, and EU and US agricultural policies.
