L’environnement des villes engendre des problèmes identitaires, sanitaires, sociaux, écologiques, etc. Des solutions ont été apportées à ces problèmes par différents mouvements d’action sociale comme ceux des communautés en santé, de l’architecture verte et des villes viables et écologiques. L’éducation relative à l’environnement trouve dans ces mouvements une source d’inspiration pour intervenir en milieu urbain et peut ainsi contribuer à éduquer les citoyens à une meilleure littératie urbaine. Quels types de développement orienteront le façonnement des villes nouvelles ? Plusieurs avenues sont possibles : développements humain, viable ou durable, esthétiques, accroissement du « capital social », etc. Chaque communauté déterminera les valeurs environnementales qui seront au cœur de la reconstruction de ses quartiers. La littératie urbaine se résume en des habiletés à lire et à recréer le milieu urbain. Les informations disponibles sur les problèmes urbains et leurs solutions ainsi que des stratégies employées traditionnellement en lecture de textes et en environnement serviront à affiner le regard des personnes impliquées. Des stratégies de créativité seront enfin mises à profit pour faciliter l’invention de solutions urbaines originales, adaptées au(x) type(s) de développement choisi(s).
