Résumé : La France, comme la plupart des pays occidentaux, a découvert le manga par l’intermédiaire des séries d’animation. Cette prise de contact s’est produite dès la fin des années 1970 autour de séries de grande consommation diffusées dans des programmes destinés à la jeunesse sur les chaînes de télévision hertziennes. Au début des années 1990, une certaine élite culturelle émet toutes sortes de critiques à l’encontre de ces dessins animés en même temps que les premières traductions de mangas apparaissent chez les éditeurs de bandes dessinées déjà installés. En parallèle, une partie des auteurs de bandes dessinées francophones cherche à affirmer la légitimité artistique de sa production en se démarquant de l’image puérile habituellement associée au médium. Des auteurs que l’on identifie comme appartenant à « La Nouvelle bande dessinée » commencent à se faire connaître et à imposer une forme de bande dessinée plus intimiste en rupture avec les récits de genre. L’arrivée croissante des mangas en France intervient au même moment que l’idée d’une bande dessinée d’auteur se développe, ce qui favorise l’identification et la valorisation d’un manga d’auteur. Seulement, au lieu de se présenter comme une différence thématique, l’opposition entre manga d’auteur et manga mainstream – en plus d’être une construction éditoriale arbitraire montrant ses limites avec des auteurs tels que Tezuka – perpétue un discours évaluatif déjà présent au sein de la bande dessinée occidentale qui établit une hiérarchie au bénéfice de la bande dessinée « d’auteur », laquelle construit sa légitimité en opposition à tout un pan du médium tout aussi légitime.
