La déferlante qui, dans le monde entier, fait du cerveau le centre de toutes les sollicitations et l'objet de tous les crédits a atteint l'Allemagne aussi.Nous sommes entrés dans « le millénaire du cerveau » et aucune activité de recherche ne peut plus faire l'impasse sur le cerveau, surtout pas du côté des sciences dites humaines.D.B.L. était la personne adéquate pour faire le lien entre deux pans de sciences que l'on a crus longtemps irréconciliables.Professeur de neurophysiologie clinique à l'université de Bonn, il connaît le cerveau « de l'intérieur ».Mais il s'y intéresse aussi « de l'extérieur », en enseignant la philosophie des sciences à la Hochschule Weilheim-Bierbronnen, en assumant la vice-présidence de la Society for the Philosophical Study of Genocide and the Holocaust et en participant aux travaux du comité de neurosciences du New York Psychoanalytic Institute.
